The Balvenie French Oak is a vibrant single malt finished in casks that have previously contained wine from the French vineyards of the Charentes. Pineau des Charentes is a fortified wine made from unfermented grape juice, to which Cognac brandy is added and then left to age. Pineau can also be found as an artisanal product in the neighbouring departments of Deux-Sèvres and Vendée. Lorne Cousin, the brand's ambassador in the United States, suggested to Cellar Master David C. Stewart that he explore these barrels after a trip to the region with his family, where he fondly remembered drinking the aperitif. This is the first finish in the Balvenie range to explore French oak. Pineau is similar to cognac in terms of production and flavour, allowing us to capitalise on the growth of this flavour profile and its premium references.
