Wholly owned by the Edrington Group since 2017, the Glenrothes distillery has fallen prey to fire on several occasions, in 1897, 1903, 1922, and most recently in 1962. In the most devastating fire of 1922, cellar number 1 was completely destroyed and 900,000 litres of alcohol went up in smoke. Known as "the Cathedral", its distillation room has housed five wash stills and five spirit stills since 1989. It has its own cooperage, which is a rarity these days. A magnificent and very subtle interweaving of floral, fruity, spicy and woody sequences, the aromatic and gustatory palette of this version oscillates, throughout the tasting, between the elegance of a refined classicism and the exuberance of a proudly claimed freedom of tone.
