In its Nardini expression, the Bitter (a popular sweet and bitter red aperitif in Italy) is very well-balanced, resembling a vegetal and herbaceous liqueur. It is indeed an unusual blend of bitter oranges, sweet oranges, Chinese rhubarb root, gentian, and Roman absinthe (among others). It is served on the rocks with a lemon zest or diluted with soda or orange juice. It is also used in the English version of Mezzo Mezzo (50/50 Bitter and Rabarbaro, on the rocks in an old-fashioned glass, with a splash of soda and a lemon zest). Note: The Nardini Bitter uses Ponceau 4R as a colorant, making it suitable for vegan and kosher diets.
